Primary School

Everyone learns and everyone achieves because everyone matters!

Homework

Homework

Children in Y5 are expected to do up to two hours of homework a week.  This includes:

  • Daily reading
  • Infinity Maths
  • Spelling Shed
  • English homework.

Daily Reading

Pupils are responsible for choosing when to change their school library book.  It is expected that pupils try to read everyday and that parents sign to say what pupils have read 5 times in a week.  Pupils can read anything - they are not restricted to their library book.  Newspapers, magazines, match reports etc are all great.  Just READ, READ, READ!  Some parents have been under the impression that they only complete the reading record when a book has been finished, however, we want a record of reading habits.  This means if pupils read for 5 minutes before they go to bed and only read 2 pages that is fine.  If they read for 10 minutes while waiting in the car, that is fine - simply record you reading habits.

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr Seuss.

Maths

Pupils will be set a quiz a week on White Rose Maths Infinity. This will dovetail exactly with the learning they have been doing in class and is a great opportunity to practice their skills at home. All children will receive a personal log in which will be stuck into their reading record. The tests will be assigned to the children and will remain on their personal portal so that they can revisit questions as often as they wish. Each quiz will only take a few minutes to complete and teachers will be able to identify tricky questions and address them back in class.

Spellings

Each week we will set a word list to practise on 'Spelling Shed'.  Pupils must complete at least one activity to show they have completed their homework, however, pupils are free to explore the platform, practise any word list and play games. The mastery section is particularly helpful for supporting the children with trickier high frequency words. The more they play, the higher up the leader board they go.  Click the picture below to access Spelling Shed.

English Homework

A copy each week's English homework will be uploaded to the Year 5 Community page on DB Primary.  Pupils can complete the work on the sheet.  Blue pen or pencil only please.  Pupils will self mark the work and keep the sheet in a homework book in school.
